Creating a Feature Wall with Textured Panels

On August 26, 2026     By Oliver Bennett

Why Texture Does More Than Colour

A wall painted in a bold shade makes a statement, but it stays resolutely flat. Texture behaves differently. Because the surface catches light at varying angles, it produces shadows that deepen, soften and travel as the day wears on. The result is a wall that feels built rather than painted, and that sense of depth is what turns a pleasant room into a memorable one.

There is a practical advantage too. Textured panels disguise the small imperfections that a flat finish exaggerates, and the relief adds a little acoustic softening in rooms with hard floors and plenty of glass. If you are already commissioning bespoke surfaces elsewhere in the home, a feature wall is the natural next step.

Choosing Your Panel Type

The range available has widened considerably, and the right choice comes down to the mood you want and the wear the wall will take.

  • Fluted and reeded profiles — narrow, evenly spaced ridges that throw crisp, rhythmic shadows. Usually supplied as painted modules, they work beautifully behind a bed, a sofa or a dining bench.
  • Timber slats — warm and architectural, typically oak or ash with a 10–15mm gap. Depth matters here: the deeper the slat, the stronger the shadow line.
  • Plaster and micro-cement effects — softer and more organic, with a hand-trowelled quality that sits comfortably in period properties.
  • Stone and composite panels — visually weightier, and ideal where the wall meets a bespoke worktop, allowing the material to continue vertically rather than stopping at the upstand.

Whichever you choose, think carefully about the edges. A good fabricator will mitre external corners so the profile wraps around them cleanly instead of ending in a visible cut.

Planning Layout and Scale

Before ordering anything, decide how far the panelling should travel. Full height, floor to ceiling, gives the most dramatic result and avoids an awkward horizontal line cutting across the room. A half-height scheme behind a sofa can work, but it needs a deliberate finish at the top, such as a capping trim or a shelf, or it will look unfinished.

Width matters as much as height. A narrow wall can take a fine, close-set flute, while a wide expanse often suits broader slats or a mix of panel widths to break up the stretch. Remember to plan around sockets, switches and radiators in advance; a bespoke panel can be routed to accommodate them, but only if the positions are known before cutting begins. Allow a small expansion gap at the skirting and cover it with a shadow gap or trim.

Lighting That Brings Texture to Life

Texture is only as good as the light falling across it. Flat, head-on illumination will flatten the relief you have paid for, so aim for grazing light instead. An LED strip positioned 75–100mm from the wall, running vertically or along a concealed shelf, will skim the surface and pull out every ridge.

Keep the colour temperature warm — around 2700K to 3000K — and put everything on a dimmer. In the evening, a low, warm wash turns the wall into a quiet backdrop; during the day, natural light from a side window does the work for free. Avoid positioning downlights directly above the wall, as they pool light at the top and leave the lower section in shadow. If you want a glow behind open slats, use a diffused strip rather than bare LEDs, which will show as individual dots.

Styling Without Clutter

The temptation with a new feature wall is to decorate it. Resist. The panel is the feature, and everything you add competes with it. Keep furniture in front of the wall low and simple, and leave a clear gap of at least 150mm between the panel and any sofa or bed so the texture reads as a backdrop rather than a headboard.

One or two considered objects are enough: a slim console, a single large print, a tall plant with architectural leaves. If you do hang artwork, choose a frame that sits flush to the wall and keep it modest in size, so the pattern continues around it. Lighting and negative space are your styling tools here, not ornament.

Practical Points Before You Commit

Order samples and view them in your own room, at different times of day — a finish that looks superb in a showroom can read very differently under a north-facing window. Check the substrate: solid walls, stud partitions and old plaster all need different fixings, and heavy composite panels may need battening.

In bathrooms and kitchens, confirm the panel is rated for moisture and seal the cut edges. Cleaning is straightforward with a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre, but avoid abrasive creams that will sit in the grooves. Finally, order a little more than you need. Bespoke panels are made to a specific profile, and matching a single module later is far harder than keeping a spare in the loft.
